Winter 2022 PD
OCMA Winter 2022 PD Event
Join us Thursday March 3rd 10:00 – 12:00 via Zoom as Heather Milburn, mathematics professor in the School of Justice & Emergency Services, Durham College, shares her research and practice of critical thinking and self-regulation in the math classroom.
Encouraging Critical Thinking and Self-Regulation through Self-Explanations and Think Alouds
Learning mathematics is not just running through procedures and doing what you are told. With critical thinking and resilience becoming essential to our student’s success, how can we structure our teaching, activities, and assessments to promote student understanding and confidence? How can self-regulation and reflection be worked into our math classrooms? Examples from practice and research techniques will be shared, highlighting student voices and self-explanations to promote deeper learning and skill transfer. There will be an opportunity for questions, application activities, and discussion throughout the presentation.
